Hello!
I’m Anna. I have been raising chickens and ducks for the last 4 years. Not too long I guess. Though we had both when I was very young and I loved them. My favorite though are the ducks. (Shhh!! Don’t tell the chickens!! 👀🤭) They are just so silly and fun to watch. I love how much they make me laugh and how they are like a Tella Novella 🥰. I can literally sit all day and voice over for them and never get tired of it 🤣🤣
I have a hot headed, one legged mallard call duck mutt named Hale that I raised inside my house with my four dogs and two cats, two children and my husband. She doesn’t know how to communicate with the other ducks or chickens very well so I’m raising this new set of ducklings along side her so she will finally have some friends outside who know how to communicate with her. Hale only learned how to talk with our family as she grew. She makes body movements to tell us what she wants and needs. She sings a song when anyone, human or dog walks by her to remind them she’s there and not too step on her. We figured this out because one night we were on the porch and I was saying that when she was little I would tell the dogs “Don’t step on Hale, Don’t step on Hale!” And she started to bob her head up and down. I said to Hale, “Is that why you do that? Because you’re saying ‘Don’t step on Hale?’” And Hale started to bob her head up and down again. Which she does for yes often. She also shakes her head back and forth vigorously for no. If you have an indoor duck, you know they can absolutely answer you with just about anything you ask and this is not a surprise for me to be having a conversation with my duck…So if you think I’m nuts…go out to the barn and ask your own ducks a yes or no question swear to goodness they will answer you…and you’re gonna freak out. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. 🤷‍♀️ anyway… ever since I informed my son about the reason why she was screaming at him and he stopped yelling back at her when he walked by they have had the SWEETEST RELATIONSHIP!! He thought he hated her!! No, she just was always scared he didn’t see her right by his feet…ducks are so amazing! If you have ducks and you never talk to them START!! They are DYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOU I PROMISE!!! ❤️❤️ anyway that’s me I’m the crazy duck lady 🤣🤣🥰🥰

I LOVED reading about Hale and the wonderful life you are sharing with her!

Also, I understand not letting the chickens know the ducks are your favorites. I adore all of my critters, but I don't think the ducks or chickens realize the geese are my favs! I try not to let it show 🪿

Welcome to BYC! It's good to meet you, and I hope we will hear more about Hale and the rest of your flocks :)

Hiya, Anna, and welcome to BYC! :frow

I loved your intro, story about Hale, and the awesome pictures! :love

When I was around 14, we had a female Rouen hatched by Momma who couldn't keep up because it had a crooked neck and ran in circles. It was probably a wry neck, but back then, my folks and I knew nothing about it. I took that duckling, called it Tootie, and raised it.

When she grew up, she'd come running to meet me at the bus stop. She was more like a dog, lol. She learned to walk normally and do lots of cute tricks, too!
