Because of Banana-
Howdy, I'm Bonnie and I'm in Texas. I have 4 hens and 1 rooster. My family had chickens when I was a kid. As an adult, I inherited my family's land and moved my own family into my childhood home. My son was 11 yrs old and he wanted to raise chickens. I warned him it was work and chickens are messy. He had 18 chickens and had a small egg business he was selling to teachers and neighbors. By the time he was 13, he was burnt out on raising chickens. He sold his flock, all but one, Banana.
He had bought Banana at Tractor Supply for $6 as a chick, a Silkie Bantam, and raised him in his bedroom in a large plastic box, until it got stinky in his room and I said it was time for Banana to live outside. He named the chick Banana because it was yellow. When Banana grew and changed colors to white, he said it was OK because bananas are white on the inside. Also, the employee at Tractor Supply had sexed the chick as female. So, Banana turned out to be male. A mean little rooster. Only my son could snuggle with him.
With the flock gone, and Banana alone in the backyard with our two male dogs, we called them the Bachelor Pad and Banana was their Wingman. They all slept together, ate together and hung out together.
We decided to get Banana a girlfriend. We called her Girlfriend. They had 4 chicks- 2 hens and 2 roosters. We kept one of each- Charlie and Princess Diana. Last November 2023, an owl killed Banana while we were in the yard. Because it was dark, we could only hear the chickens cackling in fear, so we couldn't see what they were scared of. Just as I went into their yard, I saw the owl lift off and Banana on the ground. We brought him into the house, wrapped him in a towel, and sat with him as he passed. He is buried in his favorite digging spot. Girlfriend passed away Summer 2024 from our extreme heat, 100+ temperatures.
Now, his children, Diana and Charlie, plus two old hens we adopted, run the chicken yard. They had one chick, Baby Girl. The two old hens always chase Baby Girl out. So, Baby Girl lives in the backyard with her grandpa's two old buddies, the Batchelor Pad dogs. She sleeps with them, eats their dog food, and hangs out near them.
