I have had chickens for 4 years now. We purchased 8 ready to lay Barred Rock hens from a local farm. In the last 2 years we have lost 3 of them to various health issues. I've had many pets over the years, and even hand raised a few orphan babies, and never had the problems I've had with Back Yard Chickens. I've searched through the BYC forum many times over the years. I finally decided to join because I bought my first batch of chicks and one died after 2 days, and another came down sick after 2 weeks.
We love having our back yard flock. My kids love gathering the eggs and giving them treats, and my husband grows swiss chard every summer just for them. They treat us like treat dispensers, following us around whenever we come near the run. Hopefully with the support of people with more experience, I can limit the health issues, and offer them better care when they are sick.
