Is it humane to drown a cat because it attacked your livestock?

I live 14 miles from town city folks bring cats and dogs up here and turn them loose. I' sorry if no one likes what I have to say but 22 bullet works great, its quick. Cats will kill a whole covey of quail and not eat a one. The dogs here ran in packs with coyotes, they almost wiped out my chickens. It took almost a year before my neihbhors and I where able to get things under control. Oh, its not humane to drown anything.

No, it’s definitely not humane, but I disagree with most saying that it is an act of anger.

It is very common for farmers around here to collect their live traps in the morning and take them down to their creek and leave them for some time. They walk away, come back later, and dispose of the drowned animal (usually raccoon or possum). It’s not anger, it’s routine; and it’s cheaper and cleaner than a bullet.
As for it being a cat.. well, a predator is a predator. I don’t think that most people who could drown a raccoon would be much more bothered by drowning a cat. Maybe I’m wrong.

Please understand that I am NOT condoning this in any way.
Even some of my extended family members practice this method. It’s important to understand someone’s point of view before you can educate them on why it’s wrong, and teach them humane alternatives that fit into their lifestyle.
Thank goodness someone said it. Why would anyone say drowning an animal is done from anger? It sounds like the luxurious protestations of a person who has never had to survive hand to mouth. Generally city people moralising thise who work the land and provide the city with everything they need to survive. I also am in no condoning drowning things. Im just saying stuff the outrageous statement that it’s somehow done in anger. As of farmers working hard to survive are somehow coming from the same place as psychopaths. Very unkind. And unfair. I know someone personally who had to drown his iwn beloved cat because it gad been mashed by a car, he had no one to take it to the vet before he left for work. And he HAD to leave for work to survive. He was a farmer. It was really hard for him. There is — a brave person, not an angry one

No one is saying that the cat shouldn't be euthanized. The definition of euthanization is to HUMANELY end life. Drowning is NOT humane. Farmers in charge of so many animals should always have guns as they are a fast, easy and sure fire way to euthanize animals. That is the responsible thing to do. Drowning an animal is not a brave act.

How could anyone even need to ask! Of course it's not!!! It's cruel and abuse and the person should go to jail or worse!!!
If you want to leave you chickens where animals can get to them, then you take the risk of losing them. Take the proper measures to make them safe!!!

Drowning is one of the worst deaths possible. Literally anything is more humane than drowning. It is vile and coward.
Shoot it if your laws allow to fire a gun. Or hit it in the head with a hammer. Kill it like a man.

Edit: I must confess, I sometimes drown rodents because when every trap fails, all I'm left with are water-pit type of traps.

Can't you smash them with a hammer? Or hit them with a brick? You should quit drowning them.

Water pit traps are designed to work on their own. Without water they don't work therefore when I get to the trap the mice are already dead.
But the mice have a choice. They are choosing to drown themselves after all. Traps are not the only place in the world to stuck their face in.

But you can leave the water out. They won't jump out of the bucket and then you can show up and smash em

  • Tried, they get out. My buckets are old and the plastic is very crusty.
Those pesky rats don't deserve a new expensive bucket. I used to catch them and release with a humane wooden trap until they managed to chew it and make it unusable. Now they will face the consequences of their extremely rude actions. They certainly don't deserve my money for a new fancy trap. Farmers are extremely stingy. They broke the good catch and release trap so now it's the turn of the good old bucket.
Touch a farmer's livestock and he's gonna get angry. Touch his wallet and all hell breaks loose.
