Gold necked Birchen roo over blue wheaten/duckwing split. I thought Birchen was dominant to wheaten. I expected black and blue birchen? No? Is this chick wheaten? Looks wheaten to me. Is my roo carrying recessive wheaten?

Yeah your rooster is probably carrying wheaten. What is his ancestry?
He's a Bruges, purchased egg. I think he carries duckwing because when I bred him to duckwing female he produced half birchen and half duckwing pattern. Lol. I will never get rid of wheaten if he carries wheaten too 😑

He doesn't carry duckwing but he does carry wheaten. He only has room for two e alleles, birchen and wheaten E^R/e^Wh
He doesn't have room for duckwing too, that came from the duckwing female.

Did they look like these (wheaten duckwing hybrids (plus extended black/wheaten chicks ignore those)View attachment 4106276
Pretty much. Chipmunk pattern just made me think duckwing. I did get one in my recent hatch that is mink brown, I have no ideas on that. Waiting on feathering.

I was planning on replacing this roo with his son, another gold necked birchen. He was from a father to daughter cross - Birchen to birchen, can this son also carry the wheaten gene?

Yeah, the split duckwing wheaten pattern can look duckwing at a glance but with a closer look there are differences.
I wonder if it is heterozygous for Birchen like my chicks are heterozygous for Extended Black. But I really don't know.
(All the chicks pictured are sired by a Buckeye and their mother was supposed to be a blue Ameraucana but clearly she carried duckwing and was an Easter Egger.)
