Hello all, one of my young pullets walked up to me and I noticed her nails were red. I thought they were covered in blood.

When I picked her up, this is what her toes look like. Is this frostbite?

It has been in the 60s-80s for the past week or so and I hadn't noticed this before on her.

She is walking like normal, nothing seems to hurt.

I hope it isn't anything that gets worse
Same! It seems like there is a lot of blood in nails. I wonder what is causing it......now that I look at the pictures again, has it always been black on the feet right by the nails?

It may be frostbite or her feet got caught on something.

As far as I know, they haven't. Poor little girl. I wonder why she decided to go and be the only one with it. 🥲

What has been the lowest temperature in the last 2-3 weeks? Is there a chance her toes were crushed? I would say that it is frostbite if it has been below freezing at night. The tips of a few toes look black and shriveled, and those will fall off eventually in about a month. Where does she sleep at night?

Around 2 weeks ago it was in the teens during the day and at night. But during those days they were in their coop, which has deep litter that has been getting layered since spring last year.

She either perches on wooden perches that she can't fully wrap her small feet around. Or she sleeps on what we call a second floor, a small area that is higher up. Alot of my chickens huddle on that instead of perching. They had that before their perches. That is wooden as well and is warmed alot by all those chickens on it.

I agree, it looks like Frostbite on the tips of the toes. She may lose the nails and the tip of at least one of the toes.

Keep us posted on how she's getting along.
