I bought this cutie at one week old at my local feed store. The nice lady who helped me chose my chicks said it was a female Black Australorp. And as so, that’s the way she was marked on my receipt. She’s 14 weeks now and I just realized she does not have a single comb like B/A usually do but has more of a pea comb. And also I did noticed little parts of her face are quite pale as well as her earlobes almost white and really wide. Regardless she’s amazing but I would still like to know just as reference. Thanks y’all! 😬

If your local feed store was sourcing their chicks from Hoover’s Hatchery, they were mixing black Prairie Bluebell Eggers (basically a variety of Easter Egger) in with Black Australorps this last season. The Black PBE chicks look very similar to Black Australorps, except for the pea comb.

PBEs often get the bright earlobes as well.

If she is indeed a PBE, she will most likely lay a light blue egg, however, it is always possible to get different colored eggs since they are mixes/hybrids. If she is any of the other many varieties of EE/OEs, blue green or olive eggs are likely.

This is what ours looked like as a chick, she was the only one left in a bin with a sea of Black Australorps 😆 We noticed the pea comb and snatch her up 🙂

At the time, we saw signage for BAs and PBEs at multiple locations of our local feed store, they were always combined in single bin.

Black Australorps usually have dark eyes and dark legs.

That's totally a Prairie Bluebell. I have three black ones, two of which look just like that. She's a pullet also. Gorgeous bird!

They mature to have white ear lobes (could have some pink in there sometimes). One of my black ones came down with white leakage around her face and neck once mature (no sign previously), but it looks like yours will be full black. My black PBBs lay the largest blue eggs of the PBBs I have. One has a green sheen to her feathers, one has a purple sheen to her. They have various amounts of slate washing on their legs.

In deed that’s exactly how mine looked and she was very small even smaller than all my other chicks (different viarities) although she’s now caught up in size. Her plumage looks like a B/A but her features don’t. Wow this is very interesting. Thank you so much.
