Is this what a Black Copper Marans rooster is supposed to look like?

I saw an ad for this fellow on Craigslist, for $10. He looks like my hen, but when I search photos for roosters of this breed most of them look different, with more red and orange, and blue wing. Deal or no deal?

Yeah, that's what the roosters seem to look like, much more orange. I wonder why this one has the same pattern as the hen.

Just like human children, not all chickens were destined to be beauty queens. Not every breed is going to replicate itself perfectly. If there were, outcrosses whether intentional or not, all bets are off on color. Additionally, in all breeds/lines, sports are hatched which will deviate from the appropriate color.

One cannot hatch a single egg and expect it to be a perfect SOP specimen.
That's called breeding.

I can believe utility quality BCM rooster.

It has nice feathering on outside toe, general copper tone on neck, an orange eye, and general Marans stance.

He does not have particularly good coloring, although you didn't state the age, and more of that may come....it can take several years for full coloring to complete in the roosters.

But chances are he is simply a hatchery line BCM as they are more common now.

More importantly is if he may carry the darker genes for egg shell.

My best BCM layer of dark eggs had lousy SOP coloring.

It's all in what you want.
