looking to treat vent gleet the welfare trust says to test for mareks if you have gleet and have a cockerel? as they say it could be herpes?

my cockerel died, he was old, think he got brain damage after a cat intruder freaked him out, he hit the roof,
he eldest girl just passed too she was really bad for years , she had bad illness 2 years ago leaving her a very low tummy and unable to lay eggs, was surprised she made it we lost alot of chickens to a virus that year and she was the weakest and lived!! so we let her retire gracefully , when i found her she was laying down limp i put in a box in the dark next day she was gone, she already had maggots on her bum so suspect fly strike at the end or they set in fast ,so was expected but my last girl who is full of joy and happyness healthy as hell golden and full red combed has a bit of gleet, shes had it on and off for years nothing bad though i was told to just ignore it if it will clear up and it did, but this time i want to rid it after reading about it, so i will epsom bath and canestern cream her, just worried me as i didnt like to see maggots on a chicken that died , so trying to prevent anything ive been using get rid mite shake etc to keep her dry and mite free

herpes? mareks? ive had no signs of mareks, the 1 who died was fine just old n slow still ran and ate just came foudn her layed down paralised 1 day she is 7 years old survivor with a saggy belly honestly i wondery daily ''when will it be'' she was good till this last day but didnt look stressed was happy so i lay her down to rest and was gone by morning so i think that was just as it would be, the other 2 are healthy, gleet on 1 and the other is a old bird that gets stressed easily so removed fro my main flock just the 2 gals living it up on the allotment

Sorry for your loss. :hugs

I've never heard of vent gleet being in any way related to Marek's Disease.

A saggy belly could have been ascites (water belly), but since she's passed, it's beside the point now as that isn't catchy.

Vent gleet is like a yeast infection. And it should stink.

Most treat it by bathing, drying, and then slather the vent area with Monostat cream and give some orally as well with a syringe or mix into some food like scrambled eggs. Probiotics will help that too. You can buy probiotic powder for their water, or give a little bit of yogurt each day, Greek being the better kind.

If she keeps getting it, I'd keep her on some form of probiotics at least twice a week.

thankyou for the reply, yes thats what i am going to do,
the other chicken that died yeah she had a really bad virus that wiped most my flock few years back, since she recovered when she poops she squeeks inside she was never right again but foundonline from the illness her insides was probably twisted and messed up,
due to no pain and quite happpy we kept her and her best mate at the allotments free grass and retirement lol, i am shocked she was so long after that to be honest but yeah she stank other day , farmy and when i looked at her belly it was black inside, i said to the kids i think its her time, by the evening i came to neck her and she was alredy layed down so i put her in a box she seemd quite happy dark space as she was on her way i just et her be covered her and was gone by the morning, once told, if its going to die let it die, no need to kill twice that pain isnt needed, so if there not in pain i leave them to go, if there evidently in pain im doing that to help them,

the website is bhwt and it says this lol
''Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way of preventing vent gleet from recurring, so keep a close eye on your hens

If you do not see an improvement in the first week and you keep a cockerel with your hen you will need to have the hen tested for herpes virus.''

then gogoled herpies chickens and it said mareks lol i gotr scared
