I would encourage you to do that. I think most states will test for free if AI is suspected. Here is the link for state vets and the one in Lansing:

I found the lab. But the site is abit confusing.

Looks like the pathology test only requires certain samples, not the whole carcass, or should the whole body be sent off anyway? Plus what would I ship it in?

AIV H5 PCR test is $16.00, but not sure if they require a sample of the bird, or send you the test, or need the whole body. It's not specific.

It's $200.00 for a full necropsy for a farm animal.

I can get a pcr test done for $42.00. They send the stuff, & I send the sample back.

Is the PCR test from the state or a private lab? I would call your state lab and discuss over the phone. I learned a lot more about necropsies in OH just by speaking with the vet pathologist. In most states, they will send out someone to personally test your birds if AI is suspected.

State lab.

I was gonna call tomorrow for more info. They're not very specific.

Apparently Avian Flu can't stand acidic soil, like sandy soil.

We have a mix of sand/dirt in our area, but have no way to test the acidity. Lime is used to increase soil acidity, not lower it. I would have to test our dirt, plus the stuff in the chicken run. If the acidity is pretty low, then great. I should still use something to dry out the poop in the chicken run.
