Gopher tortoise. I don't know how to go about getting a protected species.

I want a common something. I would hate for a protected animal to die in my care.

Get a box tortoise. Very cool and should be native to your area

Box Turtle. Yes, I know. But it matters because turtles and tortoises have differing care needs. There are a number of turtles that are also protected depending on the state.

I know they have different needs but I said tortoise because these dudes are more land than water. We saw some on our land when we were hiking it. I don't know if they are protected where Kay lives but I don't think so in Ohio. Cute little buggers

I thought they were terrapins (sp?)

Yes. Box turtles are terapins. Terapins are a subspecies of turtle. They're all turtles but tortoises aren't trrapins and terapins aren't tortoises
