I am not new to raising chickens, but I am always interested in learning new tricks for improvement.
Currently I'm browsing for advise and tips regarding rats.
While it's always great to meet new members, I'm sorry that rats are what brought you to our flock.
After several years of not seeing any, rats returned this fall. When I thought I had cleverly stopped them from getting into the coop by putting metal flashing around the bottom of the door, they simply chewed big holes in the side walls.
I used, as in the past, giant snap traps and electronic traps, but these guys were determined. Eventually, I moved that flock into a temporary coop, pulled up the flooring in the affected coop and dropped poison pellets into the tunnels. End of rats -- at least for now.
Best wishes with getting rid of your rats, and welcome to BYC!
