I haven't been able to find much on Jersey Giant roosters aside from general breed behavior. So, hopefully ya'll can help me...

I have a 4 month old Jersey Giant roo that seems to have no interest in crowing. He talks a little if you pet him/pick him up, but doesn't crow at all. I know that Jersey Giant roos are slow to mature and that the breed is known for being relatively quiet. Will he eventually crow a ton or are JG roos generally this quiet? If he has tried to crow, we haven't seen it. It is so odd to see a huge roo tower over all the hens and to have him be so mellow and quiet. The hens like him to hang around him and the other roos don't mess with him (he just stands tall and they all cower away from him

). The heads of the full grown hens reach the top of his back (at most!). He is HUGE and still growing!

My Roo Roo would only crow if the saw was turned on or our chichuahua would bark. Our dog sounds like a crow when he tires to bark.

He just needs something to crow at.

I've only had one JG roo, a stunning white named Buck. I remember he was slow to mature, because he was ordered as a pullet chick and it took a long time before I realized she was really a he. I had bought a black & a white so I could have 2 hens named Ebony & Ivory.

I don't remember how long it took him to crow, but man, when he did, it was pure music. He had the best crow I've ever heard, a deep rich baritone, a pleasure to hear. He was also a gentle giant, and allowed the kids to handle him.

I hope your guy turns out as nicely for you.

Our roos is an absolute doll. He is shy, but once you pick him up, he just hangs out and doesn't complain. His voice is already deep when he talks and I am sure it'll get deeper. I'd love to hear a deep crow! The ones that we have that crow now are a bit higher pitched.

If he needs something to crow at...well.... he is raised with 3 dogs and cat around and we rarely have any large birds around since the ravens keep the hawks away. We have a couple roos that crow to hear themselves talk, but the JG roo is waiting for something specifically, then he may be a quiet roo.

I think he'll be a wonderful roo to the girls too based on his personality now. We just LOVE him!

I will have to post a pic of him later so ya'll can see him!

my black NJG roo just started crowing at bout 17 wks, he now 19 wks and hes starting to sound real good. he also defends the hens from my "OVER ANXIOUS" white rock roo.

I have 2 JG roos who started crowing at 15wks and hasn't stopped since. I have also heard that they are a quiet roo but in my yard they crow from 5am til dark. Sometimes it can be a bit annoying but I live in the city and dream of one day moving to the country so it makes me feel like I have a small piece country living

My JG Cockerel is.........probably right around 18 weeks? He only started trying to crow in the last month and still sounds pretty funky. Kind of like a dinosaur? He doesn't crow much....but he is HUUGE. I catch him crowing every now and then and I do notice he crows more when something is "happening". Like the dog breaking into the other chicken pen

He avoids me like the plague, which is all I ask of a rooster
