Never seen this before, Raised plenty of quail but this is a first! Before I get into it I just want to let you know that my lovely chunky bald lady and her husband are rescues from an overcrowded and very unclean floorless coop and are currently in quail jail for quarantine before I let them integrate with the rest of my flock in my aviary. She was completely bald when I got her, to the point where I had to leave a heating plate in there enclosure because she was shaking in my house at 64° .
She's finally starting to grow her feathers back now and he's doing great! She laid one egg the day after I brought her home but hasn't laid since until today when I noticed the soft egg they had already ripped open. Do I need to increase her calcium intake? Right now I just have them on a higher protein based diet to try and promote feather growth, including mealworms inside of their substrate for them to forge for and egg yolk sprinkled on top of their food in the morning. Any recommendations on feather growth and should I up there calcium intake?
Also one more thing I'd like to mention the male has never really tried to mount her, I'm guessing he's either too old or still too weak because he's not quite lively yet. He's more lethargic than her but generally a really calm quail, doesn't mind being handled or pet, actually coos which I find adorable!
