Hey y’all !
I have a Sapphire Gem girl who is 23 weeks old, she’s been laying eggs since Christmas eve.
I get about 5 eggs per week from her. But 2-3 times per week she will lay a JUMBO size egg, and so far 4 of those eggs have been double yokers!
After she lays one of these jumbo eggs she is pretty lethargic and doesn’t really want treats and kinda secludes herself from the rest of the flock. Is there something I can do to help her? I love the double jumbos but not at her expense.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Try keeping her at a cooler temperature and more hours in the dark. The cooler temperature is to slow the double yolks down and the lack of light is to slow her laying down.

Because your hen is a newer layer, her double yolks might be a result of her system not figuring itself out yet. Come summer, on the hot days, if you still see her laying double yolkers, then you classify her as a Double Yolker (a hen known for those type of eggs.)

(I'm going off of my experience with double yolking EEs.)

Ok thanks for the advice !

I really think it will settle its self, given time. BO tend to do it for me. When they first start laying, then as the summer wears on only occasionally. Then in the spring after her molt, more double yolkers, but not as long. The third year none of them. I really would not worry about it.

I am hoping this will be the case for her. I feel so bad for her. She’s not that big and i can only imagine how bad that has to feel laying that JUMBO egg.

I have 5 barred plymouth rock. 2 weeks ago, 1 of them started laying huge, double yolk eggs every other day. The hens are identical and I have no way of isolating one or cooling them down. I live in Baja Sur California.

Raised in NC near farmland, but not on a farm, I lived to 70yrs w/o seeing or hearing of double yolked eggs. Then 3 yrs ago, I cracked my first one. Then couple years later, two more few months apart. Then last Nov ('22) entire carton was doubled. Early this April, another carton all doubled. The first carton was Twilight Zone enough. But the second 5 months later... Actually I began to take it very spiritually. Some sign of doubling in my life, like Job.... received double after his trials and faith. I'm considerably eager to see how this manifests. As though God is saying... "Stand back! Abundance is coming!" Great article. Best I found searching this topic.
