Just another Tea Tree Oil thread

Melaleuca IS Tea Tree Oil. It is the tree that Tea Tree Oil comes from.

I know that but The Company Melaleuca is where I get all my products that have the tea tree oil (Melaleuca oil) in them. I use Solumel as a bug deterrent spray It keeps the buffalo gnats from biting I only got bit twice so far and usually I have been eaten up by now. My DH who is like yah whatever came home the other night and I was spraying myself with it and he ask if it helped I said of course or I wouldn't be going outside. So he decided to try it and within an hr was asking me to make him a small spray bottle to take to work he said I haven't gotten bitten since you sprayed me it works much better than the vanilla does.

I usually mix my tea tree oil with olive oil.

AGH I PUT TEATREE OIL IN THEIR COOP CLASE TO 20 Drops in a 4 by 8 coop. I scrubbed it a changes their bedding, but will they die??

I have a 3month old hen with a foot injury. I cleaned it and put blukote on, separated her for 2 days and then put her back with the flock. She still favors that foot, but I dont see blood or infection. I think I put too much blukote on though, it's hard to see the wound now. When I put her back with the flock they are really mean to her and peck her foot. I took her back out and put just one rooster with her. Where do I get the right mixture of tea tree oil. You say I can use that to keep the other chickens from pecking at her? I want to try that. She is totally dependent on me now, and I want to stop that. When I was in our outdoor chicken run with the flock and her, she hides around me for protection.

Really appreciate any advice you have.

Just want to add that those not familiar with Tea Tree oil should proceed with caution. I personally can't get near the stuff as it literally takes my breath, gives me something like an asthmatic reaction. I don't have asthma - am not allergic to anything - but tea tree oil does me in. I've had problems using it in small amounts, such as in a hand lotion, in hair products, and in sunscreens. My reaction also includes a burning/itching feel to wherever it's been applied.

New users - proceed with caution until you know how it impacts you.

I am glad I found this! Tea tree has been my go to oil for my girls. I use it to treat the very first sign of bumble foot (a red circle on foot) I use it undiluted. I may start diluting it now but man is that stuff powerful!

I've used Tea Tree Oil on all the animals and kids for various minor injuries, dermatitis and to make sure new birds don't get picked on when they're introduced but Wow, does that stuff work!

The other day I came home to find one of my black sex links with a HUGE gash down her backside.  I could literally see the bones in this deep hole and flesh and meat were hanging.  But shwas still walking around and even pecking at herself a little so I figured I'd give it a day.  I poured Tea Tree oil full strength into the four inch long gash and then sort of smoothed her feathers down with a light coating of tea tree oil to keep the other chickens away from her.  Three days, just three days later that huge gash is closed, no infection, no blood,

thank you for your post about tea tree oil. I was out in my yard with the chickens this morning, I have two new ones that were badly battered and poorly cared for they have bare areas all over their bodies with no feathers makes me feel so sad (I live in the dessert) anyways my chickens don't like them because they look different I suppose. so I'm going to put that tea tree oil on them because I have an ample Supply I use it on my skin everyday I'm so grateful for your post thank you Cathy D

I realize this post is a tad bit old but I'm going to post anyway. I have this product around for my dog, and it's looking like a good product to possibly use on my chickens

Hey, I know this is late post but I just wanted to chime in... using tea tree oil undiluted or in large amounts is painful... I won’t tell you how i know, but let’s just say I was impressed myself with this essential oil, took advice off the internet about a certain ailment I was dealing with, and I used too much. It took days to recover as it burned my skin. I used it in the evening and couldn’t sleep it hurt so bad.
Sooo... I would not recommend putting it full strength on a chicken. I know to dogs and cats it could be deadly. I’m not certain about chickens, but just be sure to use as little as possible If you decide to use it and use it with a carrier oil (Coconut oil). Don’t get it in eyes or sensitive places like mucus membranes. Yes, it works wonders as an antiseptic, but it also can harm.
Just wanted to also note I had a hen who got her skin ripped up by an aggressive rooster and she mended up good and quick with epsom salt soak followed up with filling the gash with neosporin. That works just as well. Chickens are amazing creatures.
