Just lost my first chicken

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing pets can be so hard.

Just in case you want to learn or want to have some closure, there is the option of getting a necropsy done. I have done it for my birds to make sure it wasn't an illness the others could catch. You can get a necropsy at any university that has a vet clinic. I've gotten one done at University of TN Knoxville and Mississippi State University. They are a little pricey, I paid about $70. But if you ever want an in-depth analysis of the health of the bird prior to death, that's always an option.

Hurray! We got new babies today. They're only 2 weeks old so we can't introduce them to Marmalade yet, but we have plans on how to do that in a month or so. The picture isn't very good because of the heat lamp but I'll try to post a better one when it's not dark outside. Nugget is the Americauna, with Honeysuckle (Buff Orpington) beside her. The other two are Brown Sex-links, Caramel next to Honeysuckle and Cinnamon going into the shade.

I was given my first chicken, Butterscotch, a buff orpington, last year when my sister was doing construction on her house (they moved into a rental while the work was done). Butterscotch's flockmates didn't survive a predator while my sister couldn't be there to protect the birds, so she was given to me. I became quite attached to this sweet girl, and adopted a second attack survivor, Marmalade (who is a year younger), so she would have a companion. They got along from the moment they were introduced to each other and were so cute together.

My son, who goes out every morning to check for eggs, came in this morning to tell me that Butterscotch wasn't moving and he thought she was dead. Unfortunately, he was correct. She was sitting in the laying box with her head over the edge. I have no idea why she died. She was only 3 1/2.
Oh I’m so so sorry! I’m a new chicken lover although I don’t know what I’m doing, I worry about them daily!
