Large Bloody 4 inch gash in back of 1 yr old Wyandotte Hen. I was wondering if it was the roosters over mating her (we have 4 roosters to 8 hens, will be culling roosters soon), but my husband says it looks like a wild animal attack.

It's been gusty here, we have a lot of hawks. Our chickens free range, and generally they run into the bushes several times a day and the roosters sound the alarm. Is it possible a hawk tried to grab it her and lost, and left a gash in her back?

We have her alone with food and water in a large cardboard box in the garage right now. I don't trust the roosters to try not to mate her right now.

Should we put alcohol on her wound to cauterize it? She seems pretty calm and is still drinking water. My husband looked more closely at the gash and doesn't know if she'll make it.
