Laws & Ordinances in University Place, WA

Hi everyone... I am very new to this. I am in the middle of purchasing .52 acres in University Place, WA. I really really really want chickens. I have looked all over the web to find info in regards to if I can even have chicken. I have not found the website I need to answer my question. If someone could please direct me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated : )

If University Place, WA is an incorporated city, just call the city and ask someone about animal ordinances or zoning. If it is an unincorporated area, than you need to contact the county commissioners. Sometimes the county websites can be hard to navigate, but you might be able to find the info there.

I started by calling the department that licenses dogs and cats until I was given the phone number and name of the person I needed to speak with. He did return my call and told me that University Place has adopted Pierce County code for poultry which is 12 chickens per acre and of course, no roosters. So on your particular piece of property you should be good with a well kept coop that does not offend neighbors and 6 hens. I let our neighbors know what we were planning before we began building our coop. and have heard that sharing fresh eggs with your neighbors can be a good way of influencing their cooperation.

Please feel free to double check this information with the city for accuracy.

It takes some searching to find everything. I stopped doing the search for people beyond finding the link because I missed something one time and the person acted like I'd stabbed them in the back! LOL, not saying you'd do that, but this is some of the info that might help you.

Many of the subdivisions are HOAs so it's worth checking to see if you have an HOA... And some communities that don't have an HOA do have covenants that legally restrict having chickens so it's worth checking with the city to see if there are covenants.
