Hi everyone ,my peacock got a piece of twin/rope hung on his ankle and was stuck with his leg up a little while, until we found him. Since the swelling on the foot went down , but then has since came back. He is very immobile . Should I give antibiotics or something for swelling? Thanks for any help !

can he move his ankle and toes freely, if not it could indicate a sprain and in which case I’d recommend putting him in a crate where he can’t more round much as moving may make this worse, antibiotics wouldn’t hurt to help the swelling go down but I would urge that you make him rest and not move to much as it could escalate quickly.

Can you provide any pictures? How long ago did this happen? Is he able to move either leg or stand? He may benefit from a chicken sling chair if he will tolerate it for periods throughout the day. But he probably does not to be confined near food and water. He may have injured himself more if he fought, but hanging from his leg could have damaged ligament or tendons. Does anything seem dislocated? Can you see a vet for help? Make sure that he can be close to food and water. He may need you to help feed and water him twice a day.

Antibiotics will do nothing for an injury unless the skin is broken causing risk of infection. You can give him low dose aspirin twice a day to help with pain and swelling.
