leg mites--substitute for kerosene?

I've heard a lot of people use mineral oil & kerosene to help get rid of scaly leg mites. I can't find kerosene anywhere. Is there something else I can use, like lamp oil? Shouldn't just the mineral oil alone smother the mites? My gal's legs are UGLY.

I have heard of people using Vasoline - petrolium jelly.

Orscheln has a poultry protector spray that I keep on my birds. It seems to work well. I don't know about leg mites but I know it kills mites on the body. I get the concentrate and mix it in a bottle and it last forever.

You can't find kero in Iowa? Even in the peoples republik of massachusetts it can be had at many gas stations, after showing 3 forms of ID and signing you life away.

But I would imagine that diesel would work similarly to kero, but don't take my word on that.

Lovemychix--I was gonna ask about that stuff. My Farm & Home carries it, but they've been out of it for several months now. Does it take care of lice also?

Vicks vapor rubs works well on my Hamburg old hen, she keeps getting them while the others dont.

I got the bottle here with me. It says Chicken mites, Northern fowl mites, straw mites, and other poultry infested insects. Effective on cleaning away the eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. It's Main ingredient is potassium sorbate. Hope that helps.

Yep it would be a couple of months between treatments LOL.
for the rest of my flock, they have been treated once and never got it again. So I have not kept up with the treatments like they recommended to do so. She had beautiful legs as a young pullet. Nutty girl! I love her no matter what LOL!​
