Let’s Talk About Bird Flu

Pics
This is sad. This farm being small will be drastically affected by this financially in comparison to the huge farms.

16 miles is close.
We have had some cases here. Nearest to me is about 60 miles.

Yesterday I saw a mama cat with several kittens behind her pass though our property. There are lots of cats around here. People let them roam and do not have then spayed or neutered. I used to think well, maybe they will keep the mice population down. Heck, I love cats. I am starting to think differently now. I wish people would take care of the animals they bring home.

Sick geese in local park in-between me and the egg farm

Stupid geese fly over me every day. They fly from the water and rookery to the farm fields.
I thought about getting a hunting stamp for waterfowl last fall. Even if I didn't hit one maybe it would scare them to avoid my poultry yard.

I would think the blasts would at least deter them after a while.

If you can legally discharge a firearm on your property a little target practice might also. You could just set up something as a target and shoot away until you get the stamp. This is legal for me.

Its crazy 3000 hens is considered a small operation. Has anyone with a small "hobby flock" lost theirs? Or is it mostly thousands of confined isa browns?
A friend here on BYC lost her entire flock not too long ago. Unconfirmed but HPAI seems likely because of the signs a few birds displayed before everybody dropped dead. I mentioned it some pages back.

Can you link the info? What was her setup and how she thinks they were infected?
Unfortunately, I don't know. I'd have to dig back probably hundreds of pages in another thread to find her posts about it.

My bet is that they were infected by the droppings of migratory waterfowl as they flew over. West Michigan (where we both live) sees a lot of migration. Lots of lakes and rivers for them to stop at. Her flock could have picked up the virus while foraging in the yard.

Woah
Yes there has been many.

Follow this link to the USDA listing of all small and commercial outbreaks. Scroll throught the listing and you will see some listed as WOAH Non-Poultry.
I think all of these are non-commercial or small hobby flocks.

Per WOAH website:
"poultry

means all domesticated birds, including backyard poultry, used for the production of meat or eggs for consumption, for the production of other commercial products, for restocking supplies of game, or for breeding these categories of birds, as well as fighting cocks used for any purpose.

Birds that are kept in captivity for any reason other than those reasons referred to in the preceding paragraph, including those that are kept for shows, races, exhibitions, competitions or for breeding or selling these categories of birds as well as pet birds, are not considered to be poultry."

Yes. Crazy definition, huh?

They changed the definition some time ago so country's that import/export poultry products would know if there were outbreaks in commercial establishments. It can affect trade status.
