Liability insurance for selling eggs

This might be helpful to anyone coming here to look for answers. Explains why farmers markets have so much trouble getting quality vendors.

This is so frustrating. I have 1/6 of an acre and 7 hens. I'd love to contribute to my local fresh organic food market, as I truly believe in shopping locally and organic, non-GMO food. But on my tiny farm, I would never, ever make enough to make it worth it to invest this much. :hit

Some people have mentioned some homeowners insurance is able to add on this kind of coverage- I may try that before I give up hope!
My homeowners (sister in love) agent stuck her nose where it didn't belong... and so I was required to either sign a farm exemption, so they don't pay anything out if I were sued (or natural disaster tyoe thing effects my "income")... Add a farming policy... OR claim it was for personal consumption only... which did NOT include "friends and family". :hmm

Instead I got another agent and company. And I went with personal consumption only.

I imagine people who own their home have more risk than renters. And so it may be a consideration to need insurance. It shouldn't be this complicated... :barnie People get sick from store food all the time. I never hear much about lawsuits... just recalls. If the government controls the food it controls the people... Since there are exemptions even for people processing up to 1000 birds to sell for consumption... SEEMS like that disclaimer mentioned earlier *should* be enough protection. :rant

I wonder if asking for a suggested donation rather than formally selling them while also having a disclaimer about food born illness would cover you where you are.
Too many laws governing donations receiving. But even if you give a "gift" in exchange for money... doesn't change any possible liability as far as I know. What a stupid sue happy world... wouldn't surprise me if even when you don't get sued the FDA still has some sort of "fine or penalty" in place... ways they line their pockets while the rest of get naught. :duc

Good luck deciding what you are comfortable with! :fl

Yes, it is ridiculous!! It definitely feels like government red tape is behind all of this. And of course our litigious society. It's easier to sue the little guy so that's what people do.

I'm all about "stickin' it to the man" but I've got to protect my family, and we do own our home. I can't lose it because someone is an idiot and I can't afford attorney fees.
