Hi! My name is Dave. My parents got leghorn chickens when I was 6 months old, and thought they'd raise them for eating, but no; little toddler Dave decided they were his pets and so: so much for that... But when I was 3, we had to move away from Arizona, and so we got rid of the chickens.
I always loved chickens since then, and always wanted some. Whenever I had the chance at my uncle's place or wherever, I would go try to pet the chickens and at least gather some eggs. That's about all the chicken exposure I could get back then.
Then when the dreaded "pandemic" hit, and supply chains were affected, I figured I should get a few to have eggs as an extra source of protein if the stores went empty here in rural Montana. That was my excuse, at least! I figured 6 so that we could get about 4 eggs per day, since we don't eat that many eggs. But my friends lost a couple chicks when raising 10 a few years earlier, so I assumed we'd lose a couple as well and hence got 8. But we didn't get all the breeds I wanted, so we got 2 more that same evening from a different store; still not what I wanted but hey, chickens!
Chicken math took over, and despite losing a handful due to heat, a hawk, and illness, we had to reduce our backyard flock after reaching a peak of 39. But earlier this year, after a bout with unemployment, I just couldn't afford to keep them, and gave them away. I miss them so terribly, but hope to be able to get more as soon as I can. Meanwhile, I am keeping up with the learning and also living vicariously through the other people on here!
We had: Wyandottes, Speckled Sussex, Plymouth Rocks, Araucanas/Ameraucanas, and a handful of other breeds typically parts of a barnyard mix. Our biggest grouping were the Easter Eggers / Ameraucanas. But I think I loved our Silver Laced Wyandottes the best, and our Blue Laced Red Wyandotte had to be the prettiest.
My favorite aspect of having chickens is simply the love I get from having them. Even when they're skittish, they still love me and vice-versa. The back yard seems so quiet without them.
I'm a techno-dweeb / nerd otherwise, and have all the obvious hobbies, often centered around computers and Star Trek. But I feel like I've lost my interest in everything for the most part, after giving away my babies.
Now we're down to just 1 cat, after recently having to put another really old cat down, and losing some bunnies and hamsters over the past few years.
With FB going completely unreasonable with all their wrong policies, I finally decided to cut it completely out before the next terms of service update on 1/1/25. But BYC has been about the biggest highlight of my day for quite some time. So, I'm migrating from that FB place to this website. I'm happy to see more from y'all here!
