i am going to need to look into a hatchery, because my ENTIRE flock has Coryza, and, well, i'm at a point where i don't know what to decide with! let them live and be diseased / cull my flock.

I wish we had a hatchery in Ohio like My Pet Chicken. We have no hatcheries here that carry any variety at all to speak of. They only carry the common breeds and never have anything new I am disappointed because if seems like they used to have more breed variety than they do now. They don't even carry Silkies! Does anyone know why? I don't want to order from out of state hatcheries; too much risk;, too hard on the chicks.

Also, I am just curious how eggs at the hatcheries are fertilized? Anyone know?

You do know Meyer is in Polk, OH? And they'll let you pick up.

As for how eggs are fertilized, it's mostly sexual reproduction. There are probably some artificial insemination programs (like for meat birds) but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Really, so they have some really happy (and tired) roosters?! Wow!

I figured it was mostly artificial insemination, that is interesting.

Meyer didn't seen to have much selection either, and really, I only want a few chicks..six or less.. and I think with Meyer you have to order in quantity. The mill here will special order for us, but we looked at the Meyer website and compared to some other hatcheries in other parts of the Country, their breed selection is pretty limited. I don't know if any hatcheries in other parts of the country will ship by courier, as opposed to mail.. I supposed I can call to find out, but I bet it would be expensive.
