Hey y’all!

New guy here with what’s going on in my attempt at being a chicken dad. So, I bought a Nurture right 360 and a little giant still air. Tbh I hadn’t read anything about the 360 when I bought it; it was just the better looking one at tractor supply. I ended up buying the LG soon after because I had more eggs come. After buying the LG I started reading that the thermostat was off so I went and bought some thermometers. I got one from Home Depot (ACU-RITE) and then I bought one from petco made by zoomed. To my surprise the 360 is nearly spot on. I set both thermometers on the rack at egg level so I’m thinking that’s why the .5 is off from the top factory reading.

I then set them in the LG and WOW was it off! The LG was off by 5.7° and the humidity by 18%! That’s kind of mind blowing how far off it is and a bit disappointing but for $95 on sale I can’t complain; BUT what if someone who wasn’t gonna read up tried to use it? Would it work okay and hatch some chicks? I don’t know myself but still it’s crazy to be off that much isn’t it? Also, I forgot to take a photo of the zoomed in the LG. It’s spot on with the other in tests so I’m not too worried. What’s your thoughts?

I have attached photos to see the temp comparisons to the factory therms and the ones I bought. First set is the LG and second the 360.

Also, LG reads the temp up top and it is generally right up there. The eggs are down lower, hence the problem. With dry hatching, the hygrometer doesn't matter to me, so not sure on that one.

You mean the display vs your thermometer?
Gotta remember heat rises, and so is always rising right into the display thermometer.
My display is way off look at the photos. I get that heat rises but the eggs aren’t on the lid. I tested the temp up top and it’s still off. Also, I’m pretty sure the dangly thing under the factory display (looks like a speaker) is the temp sensor and humidity sensor. That’s not “up top” it hangs down around where the eggs are as well

I guess I should ask this and see if anyone chimes in. Do the eggs need to be 99.5° or the air? If the air is 99.5 would the eggs dissipate heat and be at a cooler temp? Maybe I need a laser thermometer...

Yes, the eggs dissipate heat. The eggs are usually around 95 when the air temp is right but there's no need to check the actual egg temp since the shell will be warmer than the inside of the egg. As long as the air temp is 99.5 or close in a forced air and 100 in a still air the eggs will be at the right temp.

I new at incubating eggs also and have been challenged to have confidence in the temperature and humidity readings I'm seeing. I decided to get a small temperature/hydrometer device that transmits on an off continuously to an app on my smart phone. I'm going to calibrate the humidity readout using Boveda for Cigars humidity kits I found on Amazon for less than 10 bucks each. I realize I can do it myself with salts and ziplock bags, but opted for the kits anyway.

Still considering the best way to verify the temperature readout is accurate since I can't submerge an electronic device in ice water and the liquid thermometers I've verified to be dead on at 32 degrees don't read identical at 100 degrees.
