Long pointy Eggs

My RIR has been laying eggs like this for months. Just dawned on me that it may not be a hatchable egg with its shape. I have a few in the incubator that I started yesterday. Anyone have any experience with these shapes? Any knowledge as to why this occurs?

I have a pullet whose first egg was "narrow", she's been laying every day for about 6wks, they're not so elongated anymore. No clue but lets see if we can get some help....

Could be any number of reasons for the shape... I actually had a couple Jersey Giants that always laid 'torpedo' eggs... they hatched just fine any time I set them... but I didn't like their temperament so I sold them off after a year or 2...

We have a Leghorn who lays those long, skinny eggs, and they hatched just fine.

Pointed or narrow eggs make it difficult for the chick to rotate or spin round and round inside the eggshell with it's egg tooth in firm contact with the eggshell. Chicks score or cut the eggshell in half from the inside. The pips kicking action finishes the process. As a general rule any chick that has not positioned itself with its head under its right wing by day 19 or 20 is a chick that will die during hatching. Egg shape is a highly inheritable trait. So the more chicks you hatch from narrow or double pointed eggs, means that in the future your flock will have ever increasing poor hatchability.

Torpedo eggs are kinda cool looking and seems like they would be less likely to cause something like egg binding. But I haven't tried hatching them and so defer to those who have already posted their experience. I have gotten a few in the past as I used to have a huge flock. Good info in case I face it in the future the.

They're totally hatchable, not the ideal shape but you should be able to get viable chicks. I have successfully incubated torpedo eggs, in fact in this springs hatch the torpedo egg hatched first and the chick was perfetly healthy. The torpedo chick was a hen and has laid, she did not inherit the torpedo egg laying skill for herself.

Thanks, chickengeorgeto, that's good information to know. Probably none of the chicks will be used later on for breeding, so that won't be a problem for us.

My two year old buff orphs look like this are always like this its odd im unsure if its her breed

My EE laid one yesterday. I thought it might have come out that way due to some trauma that she suffered the day before (due to dogs).
