I made a post here last week about my hen having a swollen abdomen and seeking help on how to drain her. Well I bought the syringe and I was ready to drain her but it didn't work. I was on her right side, three inches down from vent and two inches to her right and I went to put the needle in and she jerked even though my brother was holding her and so I only ended up poking her. So now she had a little hole and liquid was coming out of it but it wasn't blood and it wasn't the clear/yellow liquid of ascites that I've seen in videos. I went a little ways up from that hole and tried to insert the syringe again. This time I was able to keep it in her but I could not get anything to pull into the syringe, I really tried. I had to pull it out and now she had two needle holes and she continued to leak this brownish yellow fluid. If you poke someone they would just bleed so I don't understand what was happening she was obviously swollen and bloated from something?? What is this liquid?

I don't know what was happening I thought if I did it on her right side I wouldn't be hitting anything bad and she was so very swollen. I guess she wasn't squishy like it would have been if it was water belly, I just didn't know. But what is this fluid? Why was she so swollen and feeling bad? There were no other signs of issue. Healthy comb and wattles, no ugly vent like vent gleet or something. No mites. She was only pooping white and she wasn't eating but she was drinking.

I'm sorry y'all I just didn't know if there was anything I could do for her she was so scared and in pain and I realized that I was in way over my head and I had no idea how to save her and I didn't want her to suffer anymore, I put her down. I wasn't strong enough to do a necropsy the whole thing was so awful, I'm sorry. It was so hard to just put her down.

I took these photos of the the area I poked and the liquid that came out of her. After I had put her down and the liquid in the cup had settled I could see blood in it. I really don't know what was wrong with her and I'm seeking help in case there is something I don't know about so if this happens again I will be educated.

No, egg yolk peritonitis. It's also a reproductive disorder but not salpingitis.
I'm vaguely familiar but I will do more research on this, thank you. I've seen salpingitis and ascites from liver failure in necropsies I've done, but egg peritonitis is something new for me

Sorry for your loss.

Dark colored fluid like that was probably something to do with the live.

Without necropsy, it's just a guess as to what's going on. It can be education to open a hen up and take a look at the internals.
The next best thing would be to watch a necropsy video. I've linked one below that is very good.

You're right of course...that necropsy would have held answers... I have done necropsy before...it's very hard for me to bring myself to do...I will try to be stronger next time

Sorry for your loss. Ascites is simply fluid retention around body cavities. It is only a symptom of several bigger problems. I agree that is liver bile which is a very strong indication of liver failure. Now what caused the liver failure would be the question. Even if you did the autopsy yourself I am not sure you would have been able to exactly pinpoint the cause of the liver failure. Unless it is clear as day in the autopsy, a biopsy of the liver tissue most likely would have been needed to be sent to a lab to pinpoint what caused the enzyme increase and origination.

ok I guess that makes sense, that the ugly color was some of the bile. It just seemed like there was also blood once it settled out...and idk why I couldn't seem to draw any of the liquid out. With liver failure that bad I guess there wasn't anything much I could do for her. She was not very old, only 4 or 5
