I am looking for one of these great guardian livestock dogs. I have not been very successful in locating one here locally. I live in NE FL, but I am willing to travel a couple hundred miles if necessary. I have 80 acres and plently of livestock that need protection.
Thanks for any help.

I suggest a pyreneese rescue group. You may want to be open to a cross with border collie or some other ranch type dog. Be aware of a few things with these guys: Socialization when young is extremely important. We took Ludwig to puppy school at 4 mos.. even at that age, he was his own being. They are known for their independent thinking, which is why they're such great guard dogs. If they think something or someone is wrong, you cannot convince them otherwise. If you want your pyr to be your friend as well as guardian, training is really important. Ludwig is 4 yrs old, 150 lbs, and a really good buddy (mine, not my husband's not that close to my daughter). GROOMING really ought to be done professionally at least 4 times/yr. The fur is INSANE! But I really would check with a pyr forum with regards to the Florida weather. These guys were bred to sustain sub-zero temps in the Pyreneese Mountains! Be prepared for knee and/or hip problems. Americans keep breeding for impressive size and the joints haven't had a chance to evolve to support these giant frames. I suggest starting an account. I wish I had. I can't afford the $2200 accruciate surgery Ludwig should have. We have to restrict his activity and keep him on anti-inflammatories. Yea right - "restrict the activities" of a Great Pyreneese! Oh Yea - he killed 2 chickens (before he was 6 mos old) before he learned that was not an option. Caught him in the act of trying to lick the feathers off of two others. Hope that helps. Good luck and have fun!

Have you looked on Petfinder.com to see if their are any in shelter near you. You'd be amazed with how often they get puppies in the shelters. Or even a young adult who got "to big"

I am in Jasper, Where are you?? I rescue/rehome them all the time. Shoot me an email.

Thanks to everyone and their advice reagarding this breed. Please note to all who have directed me to pet finder and other rescue groups that they do not want allow me to adopt due to me having a child of the age 4. Due to liability, they only adopt out to homes with older children.

Interesting, I didnt read anywhere about age of child being a definate no

The Florida Great Pyrenese Club doesnt have child age restrictions, even a few of their dogs state "great w/children"
