Luikse Vechter aka Liege Fighter Thread

This thread is for discussing and posting pictures of Luikse Vechter/Liege Fighters.

Luikse Vechters are a large breed of game chicken. Originating in Belgium, they are the result of cross breeding between the Bruges Game and large oriental gamefowl, most likely Malays. They were designed to be large and strong, and also to make a good meal. It has been said that roosters are known to take on hawks that threaten their flocks.

These are large birds, with males reaching up to or even exceeding 30 inches in height and weighing in at up to 12 pounds. The hens are smaller, and are decent layers of large cream colored eggs.

Despite their fiery nature and aggression towards other birds, they are friendly with their human keepers.

Currently I have a small flock with birds from three different breeders. So far I have found them to be awesome birds with outgoing personalities. They definitely have a dominant attitude and will fight with other birds to establish their dominance, even the hens.

Who else keeps this breed?

nice looking birds. where did you get them
Thanks, I will attest they are friendly as cats to me, but they're beasts with the rest of my flock. Gonna be a while before I can integrate these two. They flat out dominate. It's not even a contest when my older hens try to assert over them and my girls are not timid birds by a longshot. I had to intervene immediately. I admit that was foolish on my part and learned my lesson.

I had them transported from ProbablyChickenRelated

mine are pretty good with the rest of the flock they stick to themselves for the most part when we free range them all together

we have a group of 5 brahma with our large old rooster. a group of 16 mixed olive Eggers moss Eggers starlight blue and marsns were creating dark moss Eggers and the liege trio all housed separate we just let them out and was out there with them they never fought thr liege and mixed eggers were young couple months. nobody ever fought because the brahma was dominant. everyone is older now they will stand off a little bit but nothing brutal the brahma and liege stay with their groups and the mixed go between both
