In the Brooder
Hello all -- I noticed this lump above one of my 9-week-old chick's eyes a few days ago and it has me puzzled as to what it could be.
I just got a picture of it yesterday so nothing to compare it to if it's grown or stayed the same size. The lump is firm but not rock-hard. The bump on the beak is also new and is hard like you'd expect a beak to be. I thought maybe it was a wasp sting or bug bite or something and it'd go away by itself but it hasn't gone down any over the past week or so. Any ideas on what this could be and how to treat it?
The chick is in a pen with 6 other chicks and none of the others have anything going on, it's just this one. It's acting completely normal just with this lump over its eye. (also if anybody wants to give me hope that it could be a rooster -- I wanted one rooster out of this batch of chicks (black copper marans) and it has the most comb out of everybody at 9 weeks old).
Also an unrelated incident, and I can make a separate thread for her if it's better, one of my 6 month old pullets got pecked in the face by another one of the pullets the other day and the next day I noticed the eye was a bit puffy and she was holding her neck a bit crooked. Otherwise she seemed to be acting normal-ish she's still laying eggs and eating and everything. It's 3 pullets and then the babies who are still separated and the third chicken hangs out with whoever is the "cool girl" at the minute which Catalina here definitely isn't this week so Catalina has been hanging out by herself more these past few days. Anyway, I thought the eye was looking better but today it's looking puffy again. Is this something to just monitor or something I need to treat to make sure it doesn't end up infected (and how would I do that)?
