In current news, I picked up the two young Delaware hens on Wednesday. They have been living in the run with a dog crate while Olive continues to free range and have the coop. Things are going well so far. To my surprise, everyone has continued to lay during this transition!
There was some excitement the first day when the walk-through door to the coop blew open and slammed against the side of the run and frightened everyone half to death. Then they were all nervous and Olive was afraid to go near the run for the next day or so. But I got the door tied in place and peace has reigned.
Yesterday afternoon and especially today, Olive has been hanging around the run and seems to want the new girls to come out. The calmer one, Adeline, has been occasionally pecking at the grass on her side of the wire door while Olive pecks at the grass on her side, pretty much beak to beak. Angel is not quite sure yet and has kept a little more distance. I do think that Olive will probably be bottom in the pecking order. She was raised with the other birds I had, and just naturally ended up in charge with zero scuffling.
These new girls were in a flock of about 30, so they are probably much more experienced with jockeying for position. Olive is a gentle, sheltered girly.
Hopefully they will figure it out without too much drama.
