They self destruct far before they're reproductive unless specially fed. Even then males are often too large to successfully mount anything and females don't tend to lay before 6 months and lay only a few eggs a week

They're not necessarily hard to breed. If you have the parent stock like hatcheries do, you can pump them out. But breeding two together will not give consistent results
