Marti's Poultry Farm

Ok I usually get a reply back from Murray McMurray Hatchery within hours when asking about chickens or whatever...

Sooooo....

I asked them directly via their contact us form if it was indeed true that they have purchased Marti's Poultry Farm....
Sent the questions actually several times....

I have not heard a word from them so since they are not denying it my gut tells me that it is 99.9% true that they
did acquire Marti's Poultry Farm.. Why they will not say yes we did is beyond me....

Just thought I would tell you the results of my "tiny" investigation.

I contacted another family run hatchery in Missouri (Cackle Hatchery http://www.cacklehatchery.com), and I asked them about Marti Poultry. The hatchery has indeed closed, and (according to the lady I spoke with) Murrary MacMurray did not buy out Marti. In fact, Cackle bought a lot of of their bantam breed stock when they closed. Seems that their were some illnesses in the family that led Marti to shut their doors. To bad. The selection at Cackle isn't quite as large as Marti's, but they have most of the breeds I'm looking for, so I'm going to give them try.

I've dealt with Cackle quite abit, and think they are great. When I'm ready to order again I'm going to order from them.

Well, now I'm a bit undecided... I read some of the posts regarding Cackle and other poultry suppliers in the Garden Watchdog section of davesgarden.com (http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/4436/). This is a very informative and comprehensive site, btw. Cackle Poultry sure has a lot of negative responses (~30%)- many refer to birds arriving sick and poor customer service. Comparatively, Murray McMurray also has about a 30% negative rating, so this may just be indicative of larger operations.

I see a lot of folks here recommend Ideal Poultry. They seem to have very good ratings, although, not as many total ratings as either Cackle or McMurray. Also, the poultry companies obviously keep up with the watchdog forum as there are a number of company responses to the negative comments... makes for some interesting reading.

Ideal Hatchery has been good for BYC in alot of ways and wants your customer's appreciation and do more business with them. I have a love and hate relationship with them but mostly the pros outweigh the cons LOL!

I dont have good reveiws of Cackle, a few of my chicken friends down south had mixed reveiws but the quality of chicks are below par, some of the traditional breeds ended up in muddy colors, or a Welsummer with white earlobes, or sending the wrong breed or wrong sex of chicks.

You will always find these negetive rating, personally I think there alot of people posting these things and have never ordered chicks from any of them.
Cackle and McMurray and Ideal all all good hatcheries and will do you right on anything that doesn't arrive alive. They usually throw in a few extra anyway. Just remeber there are alot of negetive people out there.

By the way I have never gotten any sick chicks from any of these places.

You're right I never ordered anything from Cackle, I SHARED an order with a friend....that's close enough. Had stores ordering thru Cackle and they sell them. They are OK but they did suffer some losses and mostly 90 percent males in the straight run batches they get.

I'm looking at the durablity, quality and production of those hatchery birds. If they dont meet my standards, I don't order from them.

Wow! What a bummer.
I've ordered poultry from Marti's for decades! In all of that time I only received one very bad shipment and that was a postal service mistake (apparently ran over by a forklift?). Marti's re-shipped the order without any questions. That said I must admit this. My last shipment (2011) was very untypical of the hatchery with no extra chicks and an order of 100% pullets contained four cockerels? My history with the company had been too positive for far too long to allow that to preclude me from any future business. I wonder now if the cogs of selling/closing the hatchery were already in motion?

Considering it's mid February and the website apparently still isn't up they most assuredly have been sold or closed. Thanks for the flocks Marti's!

Yeah, we always had a positive experience with Marti, it's too bad they're closed. Ideal has been very good to us so far, and Murray has gotten better and better over the years.
