In the Brooder
In March and April of 2024 we got our very first chicks from tractor supply. We got 2 Wyandottes, 2 Black Australorps, and 2 Buff Orpingtons. A month later we wanted to expand our small flock and got 4 Araucanas and prayed at least one would be a rooster, one was in fact a rooster and then we waited for the eggs to come. Sadly though we lost one Wyandotte and one Araucana to our dog, but we still had a decent sized flock. We finally got our first egg in July and our second and third come a couple days after. I accidentally broke our second and third eggs while carrying them lol. In December we decided to incubate our very own eggs while hoping for a new rooster because our current rooster has a broken neck, I have made a post about that incident, and we thought he was no longer fertilizing eggs. We decided to incubate 6 eggs and wound up with 5 viable ones (the rooster is still fertilizing eggs as we can see). A week after they hatched we were able to identify the sex of the chicks and surprisingly enough we had 3! new baby roosters and 2 hens. 2 of the new roosters are pure Araucanas and the rest of the chicks are mixed breeds. We are very proud of our little growing flock and are having a much more positive experience with our new babies. They come to greet us when we approach the coop and they love being petted and scratched.
*Pics 1-7 are the new chicks at about 6 weeks old-ish
*Pics 8-10 are the original flock seeing snow for the first time
*Pic 11 is the chicks first time outside in the big coop
*Pics 12-14 are the chicks' hatch day
*Side note- the state of our coop is not very vegetative, but the chickens are let out to free roam the yard and forage in the grass when its growing, but they get a heavily nutritious scratch feed along with their actual feed*
