Mites: I've tried EVERYTHING

Never had mites (dare I say that outloud)? Anyway, all our animals get brewers yeast. I first found it as a dust for my dogs and kitties, while browsing the local healthfood store. It said to
use it just like flea powder AND add a bit to their water supply. It worked wonderfully. More dogs and kitties and chickens later (and quite a few years) I am still
using it. The dogs are outside dogs mostly, and have ample opportunity for fleas, ticks etc to get on them. Not a tick in years. No bugs on the chickens either. The most I can
figure out is that the brewers yeast (B vitamin) has a particular oder that bugs don't like. Now I get a brewers yeast tablet at Wallyworld and mix it in the chickens water and use the tablets
for doggie treats. IT is in the pet supply area next to the doggie vitamins.

I know this will sound horrible, but I just couldn't get rid of mites, the coops are in the woods, surrounded by wild birds. The is NO WAY I would be able to kill all of the mites ( had red mites ) I put frontline on all my birds, three drops each, and left them. I still see the odd mite here an there, but They're never on the birds, also DE DOES work, it just takes a llooooonnnnggggg time. I tried permethrin, but it didn't work, so I started putting DE in the bedding, well, six months later, the number of mites I see has greatly dicreesed, probably a combo of the frontline, permethrin,De, garlic, and cayenne. So, they might be there, but they aren't hurting my birds... hope this helps.

Anybody have any pictures of their birds with mites on them? I dont think Ive ever seen one. I put down compost as a flooring in my chickens coop and I dont recall seeing any insects hanging out there. I do have a large amount of flies over by my meat chickens but then again they are messy birds that spill their food and water.

Have you tried using Frontline for kittens or puppies? In April my chickens got mites 4 days before a show. I was devastated because I knew I would no be able to go, but I decided I was going to try. I bathed the chickens in flea shampoo 4 times in a row, let them dry a bit, and put a tiny drop of Frontline on the neck where they can reach it. I also stripped their coop and dusted the inside heavily. The next day the mites were gone and I was able to take the birds to the show.

I used the 100 lbs+ stuff, more medicine for your money. That, and that's what we have to get for our dogs anyway.

I mix one of those plastic buckets with the rope handles, 3/4 full of one gallon water 1/2oz permitherin mixture. Grab each bird's back wings with one hand and hold the comb with the other. Dip them in up to there earlobes. Then I let go of the comb pass my fingers over the head and pass my hand near there vent while there butts still in the water. Works good for me.

maybe this will help you. what i did is clean out all nest boxes and every thing in hen house. i mixed bleach at a ratio of one part bleach and four parts water.i then saturated everything even the walk area. which i did at night and when dried i put sand on floors with de mixed in it as well as dust box and nesting material. and it worked for me with no harmful effects on my birds.
