I got a group of BYM hatching eggs, and now have six chicks.

Two have feathered legs. Yellow legs, white legs, crests, white to black and speckled, I seem to have it all.

I have one that is white with a crest, and noticed today that he has 5 toes!

Definitely a cockerel, any guesses on breeds? My guess is Cream Legbar and Dorking, but there has to be something else in there because I don't think either of those are white as chicks. Definitely not a bantam of any kind.

It’s basically a shot in the dark at this point. I’m guessing he might have Silkie in his lineage, pretty far back. That would give the crest and five toes. Or maybe Houdan…that’s more likely. Do you know what the possible parent breeds were?

No, I didn't ask. I know he had Jersey Giant, Marans, and some kind of barred breed. Barred Rock, maybe? The white one came from a green egg, which is why I thought cream Legbar.

The breeds he mentioned were all dual purpose breeds, but I only remember those three.

In a breeding mixed flock it doesn't take long for the birds to get all mixed up. I often have no idea who the biological parents of my chicks are, and it is rare for 2 birds to look the same.

If he came from a green egg, it could be a Legbar, but they should lay blue. It could’ve been from a Legbar-based Olive Egger though…and since those are missed breeds already, that messes things up even more 😂 It might be easier to tell what he/she is as they get more feathers in. I’m also not convinced he’s a cockerel, but it’s also hard to tell in the photo, you can see him best.

He was the first to get his comb, and it's pretty red. It's a weird comb, though. Looks rather like the back half of a traditional comb, but without points.

I understand this was a multi-generational flock, so could be just about anything. It's fun to speculate, though, especially with the five toes AND the crest.

Ooo, if he’s got an odd comb, that could narrow it down a bit…it’ll take a while to fully be able to tell what kind it is though.
