Molting

Increase the protein intake. Since they don't lay while molting you can switch from layer feed to starter/grower or flock raiser.

Welcome to BYC, Robin! Glad you could join our flock...:frow

To expand on your question, I'm wondering what the experienced flockmasters recommend for base diet when half the flock is molting and the other half is still laying actively. They are currently all on layer crumbles with an afternoon treat in a large fenced yard environment.

Anything other than layer feed. It's a bit of a myth that you need to feed layer to get eggs. There is no magic ingredient in it. It's just got less protein and a whole lot more calcium. A lot of us here don't even bother with the stuff.

Thanks. Guess we got started on it with recommendations from our local chicken mentors when we got started. We supplement calcium separately and feed back the eggshells, so we could drop layer altogether.
