What is the most humane way to kill a rooster? We are rather attached to them but we've got too many and we need the meat. Also the three we're going to call are very nice to us but abuse the hens. Today they went after a sexually immature pullet, she was pretty terrified, throwing herself against walls and running as fast as she could.... and when the gentle alpha rooster stepped in to defend her, they got rather savage with him, big feathers flying, etc. I'd never seen them go that violent, there was a second when I thought I was going to see a legit cock fight to the death. And they don't even have their Spurs yet!

Someone was saying if you hang them upside down for a while they'll pass out and then they won't feel when you be had them. But how long does it take for them to pass out? Do you think that would be more stressful than just chopping off their head quick?

Any thoughts or anecdotes are appreciated. This is a little stressful as we've never killed our own animals before, but we're trying to get used to it so we can feed our children good meat and partake less in the factory farm system. They've had good lives. Alas we grew a bit attached, it's hard not to when you take care of them for months.

Mine never passed out unless they had a heart attack.
Age also determines cooking methods

I use a cut up kitty litter jug as a cone

I use a PVC pipe cutter to remove the head . I have to rest the carcass in the refrigerator or cooler until rigor mortis has passed. Some don't. Might be the method of dispatching.
