Hatching

Hi! I’m hatching Muscovy eggs for the first time with a borrowed incubator (and it’s been a long while since I’ve done any hatching) and looking for some advice- though I’m sure this is a dumb question I want to make sure I get it right! I found the guide by yinepu when googling and I’ve decided to try to follow all of that but found myself wondering what direction to put the eggs in the turner when they are on their sides. I’ve only ever hatched upright so I want to make sure I’m understanding.

It is a Brinsea Octagon 20 that I’m borrowing from a friend.

I am following the shipped eggs protocol because even though these were laid here, 2 of them have their air cells a bit off center (they are about at the “shoulder” of the egg). -As a side note, these eggs are also the biggest at 82-83g where my others in the batch average 65g.- I’m at about 48 hours of incubation so I’m just about to sit them on the autoturner but keep them upright until day 15. But I do want to lay them down on day 15 since the guide sites this will increase hatchability. -Also as a side note-will the air cell correct itself on those or will it be stuck there? Is that of consequence?-

So, when I lay them on their side at day 15, should I lay them where the auto turner rocks them side to side (how they would roll across a counter), or rocks them pointy end to round end (head over heels)? I feel like side to side like they would roll makes more sense and that’s why I feel silly asking, but if that is the case why are we hand turning with the X O method also since it’s in the same direction as the autoturner?

Welcome to BYC. Can you post a picture of the eggs in the incubator?
Thanks! I was hoping you would be one to answer. :) Here’s the photo of them currently. Still upright. They are almost at 48 hours.

Interesting that two of them have those off-center air cells. I've seen those a few times and I think they hatched.

For me, I found that humidity is key when hatching Muscovy ducklings. I try to keep my humidity 35-45%. What's your humidity at?

This incubator does not have a humidity reader unfortunately. I am ordering one so I can monitor. I am currently leaving them dry as the guide by yinepu stated. I weighed them all when I set them and was planning to weight again here shortly before I put them on the autoturner before I add any water.

I weighed them on the 15th and they seemed like they were going to need a little humidity so I put a little water in. I got my reader in today and it is currently reading 29-30%.

My main question is about when I lay them down on day 15 which direction they need to be in the incubator. I will secure them so they cannot roll, but should the direction that they rock on the turner be from side to side (the direction they would roll on a counter) or should they rock round end to pointy end (the way you might invert one if holding between your pointer and thumb)? I feel like side to side makes more sense the other way just seems like it would be too rough (and that’s why I feel silly asking), but if that is the case why are we hand turning with the X O method also since it’s in the same direction the autoturner would be doing?
