My 6 month old Orpington diarrhea, white around vent and now limping.

Thank you so much for asking! She is amazing. She is back with the others, her poop is normal and she isn’t limping. Actually when I put her back out there, I realized that one of my silkies was picking on her so I think she was injured and that was the reason for the limping. So I did a reintegration and now they are fine! She is really taking her time to come
Into lay and my
Silkies are broody so we have an egg shortage in our house! Hahaha thank you again for all of your help!
Glad to hear she's doing well!
Good luck with your hatches.
Thank you for the update.

Hi everyone! After a few weeks of her doing great and enjoying free foraging in our yard she started limping again yesterday and is now twisting her neck. I have no idea what I am missing but she is back in the cage in the garage because she can’t really move. Does anyone know what it could be after looking at her photos?

What are you feeding?

How long have you given the B-Complex?

Twisting of the neck is a neurological symptom called Wry Neck. Some common causes are Marek's Disease, Injury and/or nutritional deficiency.

I'd start her on vitamin therapy of 400IU Vitamin E and 1/4tablet B-Complex daily along with a small amount of egg to help with the uptake of E.

Unfortunately since she improves, the declines, she may have disease like Marek's, but it's hard to know unless you lose her and have testing performed.

I'd stick with a nutritionally balanced Chick Starter Crumble so she's getting at least 18-22% protein daily.

Thank you so much. This is sort of what I was afraid of. We feed Mile Four Layer feed because my other hens are laying. She also has free time in the yard usually 6-8 hours a day which she spends foraging. This is so sad. I stopped the b complex once she was back in the coop with the other girls.

One of my other hens always goes after her so my husband thinks she knows something is wrong and is trying to protect the rest of the flock.

Speaking of.. do I need to worry about her infecting the rest of the hens! They all seem fine. She has been quarantined again.

I will up her vitamin intake like you suggested and hope to support her but if it is mareks or another disease what do people do?

Hi again! I’m sorry I keep messaging I’m just worrying that I’m doing the right thing. Her diarrhea is green, both wings are drooping (she has no control over them) she cannot walk, one leg seems to be totally paralyzed now. The other one she is pedaling. The twisted neck has gotten worse she is completely looking at us upside down now. She has no balance. Unfortunately all the symptoms seem to point to mareks. Are my other hens going to be okay?

Oh no, I'm sorry!:hugs

It could be Marek's you're dealing with. Without testing, it's very hard to know.

As for whether or not the others will be o.k., if it's Marek's, they have been exposed. Some birds will never show any symptoms, while others might. I know the answer is vague, but no one can say they are perfectly fine or not. Provide everyone with fresh food/water, keep the housing fairly tidy and enjoy your birds. Address problems/symptoms as they arise. Often this is the best we can hope for.
