Back in 2020 i did an ancestry dna test in order to know where my ancestors came from. Found out i was northern english (like 85%. Im sour cream kind of white). With the dna test i was given a few months of the family tree bit and i did some digging.
Come to find out that my grandparents were the first generation to not be farmers. Ever since i have wanted to get back to my roots and farm. I spent some time in alaska working to have start up money for my farm and then all that money went into taking care of my parents.
Then 2 ish week ago i had a dream. A dream about chickens. So i started by googling a lot. Looking up breeds, coops, runs, sickness, predators, enrichment, and and all DIY ideas, and what i would need for chicks. My problem was that no one had chicks.
Then i stopped at tractor supply last week and OMG THEY HAD BIRDS. They wanted me to buy at least 4. I wanted to start with 2. So me and this other lady bought birds together (she bought 10 plus my 2). I grabbed a bag of pine shavings and my two Rustic rocks and went on home to get them set up. After javing them for a few days i thought they looked kinda lonley. So i set a goal to go buy four more from a local feed store. So yesterday i bought 2 rhode isl. Blues and 2 jersey black giants. So 6 birds.
Well as it seems to go with chickens birds die or go missing and i came home from work today with only 5 birds so im a tad sad but not overly worried about it. May is when the feed store will have golden comets again and i plan to get maybe 3 or 4 more girls.
today after work i stopped by the local yamaha dealer and asked about their pallets by the trash and they loaded my van up and after i went to the local lumber mill and got some scrap pieces of wood. Im working on building my own coop and run for my girls.
My goal is to build as much as i can using recycled, reused, and scraps. I dont see a need to buy fancy new things i cant afford.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to read and smoke green, hang out with my mom, go on joy rides, eat good food.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am the oldest of 3, my brother lives near by and my sister passed in dec '23. I named one of my girls after her. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats(these cats are gonna have to learn to not eat my chickens.)
As far as work goes i do gig work (doorfash, spark, lyft) its okay and the money is fine but i want more for myself.
Im excited to start this journey of chickens and hope to turn it into something good for my family.
Thanks for having me here.
