My chicken is utterly confused about their gender.

I had a hen that was an occasional layer of brown eggs. She was head hen and as I had no rooster she took on many duties that a rooster would normally do.
She (successfully) fought off a hawk attack on one of the pullets.
She had a special friend among the hens and ‘mated’ her quite frequently. Both seemed happy with this arrangement.
She crowed once or twice but not regularly.

What signs of being a rooster is your turken showing? At 29 weeks, it sounds like maybe if it’s a girl, she is getting ready to lay eggs - which would cause the comb and wattles to turn more red. I’d be interested in seeing pics of that one too.

Is the Turken mating your hens? How many other hens do you have? Any other roosters in the flock?

The silkie pics are difficult to tell. He/she has a little bit of a crest still, and isn’t screaming male or female at this point, a comb picture may help, as adult silkies generally have quite different size/shape combs.

I too have had a hen who started crowing, so it is possible. My girl never tried to mate with my other hens though.

Yes, my turken is mating with the hens. We dont have any other roosters. I have 16 hens total not including the silkie.

Oops, sorry I didn’t see your turken pictures before my last message. Looking at the color alone, the turken does look like a male. I am not super familiar with the breed but it’s a very pretty bird! Hmmm that does seem very weird for a silkie to decide to be the dominant top hen if there is already another male there. How long has this been going on with the silkie crowing and mating the hens?

My guess is still that the silkie was a roo all along that hadn’t matured… but the egg mystery is very intriguing.

The silkie just started mating with the other hens last week that i know of.

I first heard a crow from the silkie i believe 2 weeks ago.
Did you ever watch the silkie lay an egg? If not I would be inclined to think the egg came from elsewhere. Oh when you take pics of the silkie’s comb, will you get a picture of the spurs as well?

Spurs, crowing and mating all strongly suggest male.
