My chicken was attacked last night, and now by morning time now has baby maggots growing.

The feed store to me to use Catron IV.....I bought it, then called the Catron IV phone number listed and they said not for use is chickens... Please help, I thought this was my answer, she is so sick.... I read that the maggots will die on contact... Can I use The Catron IV or not????

Yep. The active ingredient is half a percent of permethrin, which is a very common insecticide in backyard coops. The Catron people are just covering their butts. Since it's only half a percent, I wouldn't expect the maggots to die immediately upon contact, though. Also, leaving dead maggots in the wound is gross and unsanitary. Can you remove them [EDT: the live maggots] with tweezers, rinse everything with Vetericyn wound spray (or saline) and then coat with antibiotic ointment and top everything with a spray of Blu-Kote?

I would take her to a vet if I were you. Just to make sure she is okay. I wouldn't think it would be too pricy. Maggots can cause severe damage and even destroy from the inside. If the wound is not too bad, then see if you can get some antibiotics but if you think it is too bad, I would take her on. Praying for you. GOD is by your side. ❤❤

I agree, use the Catron IV to help get the maggots out. Flush the wounds very well with saline, diluted betadine or chlorhexidine - if you need to, pick out any maggots you see with tweezers.

When you have time, photos of the wounds would be good. Once you have the maggots gone, spray with Vetericyn or apply triple antibiotic ointment to the wounds.

You mention she is sick - I can only assume she is lethargic? Try to get her hydrated, give electrolytes, poultry vitamins or a little sugar water. Once she is drinking, then worry about food - her normal food, chopped egg or a little tuna would be good.

It's hard to know but likely antibiotics would be a good idea if the wounds are severe and she has flystrike. You can find Procaine Penicillin G at Tractor Supply in the refrigerated section. Dosage is 1/4cc injected into the breast muscle 1/4" deep given for 4days. Alternate sides each day.

Keep us posted.

We have done all of the above., hydrogen peroxide/water mixture. diluted betadine, antibiotic ointment into the open wounds... ...she is drinking and lethargic. we missed a spot, she has several puncture wounds.... and this morning found large maggots in an area under her neck.. tweezers to get them out.. we think we FINALLY got them all, but check her often to see if we can see any.. she has been isolated in the bathroom in crate and kept warm.with heater and heat lamp. she is not fully dry though due to all the rinsing we have been doing to flush out the maggots. I am giving antibiotics. .. so i can give the Catron IV? they are large puncture wounds...

I would use the Cateon IV since it is permethrin 0.5% for use of most farm animals to control lice and maggots. Stop the hydrogen peroxide since continued use may damage tissue. Stay with weak betadine, chlohexidene, Vetericyn wound spray, and plain neosporin ointment for treatment. Watch for any abscesses in the puncture wounds. It sounds like you are doing a good job, and I hope she can survive the flystrike. Here is a good article to read about flystrike:

It appears that we got all the maggots off.. we cleanse her twice a day with a betadine/water solution and keep it dry.. wash her butt too.. she poops and her bottom looks very sore then spray the area with antiseptic hoping for the area not to break down and have open sores.... she drinks about 3/4 cup water, honey added to it.. i tried applesauce, a mash mixture with her food and water. She is not eating!! It is day 5 and she has barely eaten... .Ive tried egg yolks which she usually loves, she just so lethargic .I know she needs to eat something soon or we are going to loose her..... any suggestions.. I dont want to force her, im afraid she will aspirate and that won't be good..

Are you brave enough to try tube-feeding?

EDT: Okay, that was an awkward way to put it. Would you be willing to learn to tube-feed? Because Casportpony is experienced at it, and could probably show you how.

If you can buy some aquarium air tubing, and a large syringe that will connect to it, you can tube feed her. The end of the tube that goes into her throat has to be melted (just barely) and softened with a lighter. You can give thinned food, egg, and yogurt through this until you get a larger proper tubeand catheter syringe from a vet. Here is some tube feeding advice:
