I think I heard they are poisonous to dogs but she loves them. She steals them and manages to get a few peelings off the floor when we peel potatoes. She will stand right there hawking for any to drop and beg. Is this true or can she have them? Is she missing some kind of vitamin that makes her want them? Is is normal? Do your dogs do this? She likes raw carrots too.

This is my saint bernard that is 11 months now.

My saints LOVE raw veggies too..
They'll eat a whole bag of carrots if i let them.
They also love Kale and celery and summer squash and zuchs.. fresh green beans.
My female counter surfs..if there is a veggie on the counter.. she assumes its hers.

My dogs love veggies too. I tried to grow veggies when they were pups... they helped themselves and ate nearly everything.

I just gave them some sweet potatoes to play with the other day.

It's the green raw bit of potatoes that are bad for dogs. Potatoes are fine if peeled and cooked for dogs.

Potatoes contain solanine which can be primarily found in green sprouts and green potato skins. Peeled potatoes have been found to contain 30-80% less solanine than unpeeled potatoes, and green potatoes should always be peeled if they are to be used at all. If fed in large quantities, solanine poisoning can cause death. There is research that suggests that doses of 1 to 2 mg per pound of body weight can cause toxic symptoms, and doses of 2 to 3 mg per pound of body weight can be fatal. Commercial varieties of potatoes are screened for solanine levels, and most have a solanine content of less than 0.2mg/g.

Hope your dog doesn't find out he can dig them up out of gardens! My dog discovered carrots come out of the garden, and I had to put a fence around it shortly thereafter.

A few potato peelings, which is what the o.p. was talking about, isn't going to hurt anything.

A whole lot of raw potatoes or peelings would be riskier, but how much it'd take to see problems would depend on the particular potato variety and how it was stored. You'd get digestive upset/pain at lower doses than you'd get actual fatality or permanent kidney/liver damage.
