Hi guys, I've got aboutique a 5 week old duck and it's making a sort of soft coughing sound. It's been acting totally normal, kept in a warm area with a heat lamp that they can get away from if they're too warm. I've also been giving them a warm bath every day, mostly just to let them play in the water every day, but also to keep them clean. Today the one started making a soft coughing noise that or a huffing noise? Like it's clearing it's throat? I checked to make sure there was nothing blocking it's airway anfor they always have access to water and there's no discharge from its nose so I'm not sure why it's coughing.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Welcome!! I've had some ducks and ducklings with sniffles. It usually clears itself up as long as they have a good brooder, clean bedding, fresh water, a nice warm spot and good food. If needed, you can get some medicated feed or water soluble erythromycin for him at most feed stores. A course of mild antibiotics should clear it up.

Your duck sounds very sick with some kind of respiratory or sinus infection. You should separate her from the other duck, put her in clean bedding, give her fresh water, and you may want to get some medicated feed or water soluble antibiotics. She sounds very sick.

I know I am so late to this, 8 years late, buuut, this was happening with my young duck today as well. I have 2, I got them on August 18 2024 and it is currently September 24 2024. I have a silver appleyard duckling whom we think is a female and a black swedish duck whom we think is a male. My SA (silver appleyard) was coughing and making weird noises but I did a few things that helped. I gave them fresh water, peas, messaged her neck a little bit, lightly, and finally let them go outside with my sprinklers on. We believe that they were anywhere from 1-2 weeks old when we got them, so they would be around 5 or 6 weeks like yours will. She was the only one doing the coughing, not my swedish duck. When I let them outside with my sprinklers on for a while later in the evening she stopped and didn't do it again after I also cleaned their brooder + added new bedding (I do that every evening), today it was almost 100 degrees so I suspect she was hot and needed fresh, cool air. I was so concerned but when I saw the comment of the other person who responded to you I was so relieved that my duck is not the only one!
