My hen Pearlie is dying

@Animalfisherwoman is she still with us?

She is. On Wednesday morning, she started drinking and eating. Not a lot so I did two more syringe feedings of nutridrench/milk/yogurt. I mentioned that I'd been giving her amox. Yesterday I started some metacam.

I didn't trust her with going into the coop yesterday so brought her in the bedroom to see if she'd eat more. She does eat more, she is preening too, but otherwise she just goes to sleep or stands there with her eyes closed. Today she drank a lot more water. She's also eaten at least one small tin containing chili beans, seed, chicken feed mashed up. The "tin" are the ones that the pizza place delivers extra anchovies or cheese in.

I put her back with the flock for a second day. The birds that were bugging her now aren't and she's scavanging with her bestie Esme (our head hen). She's making an effort to reintegrate with them.

Fingers crossed for Pearlie, I hope she is a Harvey miracle.

sounds like your doing great with the care your giving her, just keep up for full course of the antibiotics even though she is doing better to avoid her developing a super bug, strange things she likes to eat but it's good in a way too as she started eating, my hens wouldn't eat beans if that was all there was to eat, but they have their favorites too that they only get occasionally so if ever have to medicate them.

This is very encouraging! Keep it up!

Tonight is Pearlie's first night back in the coop since Saturday.

I didn't have to coax her. She went right in there and up to her sleeping spot. There's food and water in there.

Hopefully Pearlie will be OK. I got Pearl from the pound in November. She's been a near-daily egglayer since coming here, so I figure she is about 1 1/2 to 2 years old. Possibly an Easter present for some kid. She's always been more receptive to cuddles as far as chickens go. Today I reached for her and she gave that noise of annoyance, like a whine, then walked off, bright-eyed.

I was never so glad to see that.

I’m so glad!!! I have a crazy story I need to write an article on... loooonggg story short, I had a hen acting like she was fiend that moment for 4 months... after that she just randomly got better. (Well, not randomly, i practically was her full time caregiver... I had to force everything down her, and it was super stressful, it took money too... but it all paid off!)
