Hi all! It’s taken three batches of chicks but I finally have a lap chicken! This little baby, whom I’m naming Mellon (bonus points if you catch the reference!), is about 3 weeks old. We have three of them and two are frizzled EE/ Silkie crosses, and one is just a regular smooth feathered EE/Silkie cross. I can’t for the life of me figure out if they are boys or girls lol 😂 this one is Mellon and I was curious if we were thinking pullet or roo and how you know.

Thanks in advance!! I’ll be back with pics of the rest as they feather. We also have two chocolate Orpingtons that we want to sex as well AND I’m getting some pure silkies from the lady I got Mellon and they’re siblings from ❤️ I’m honestly not even sure one of the Orps is a chocolate orpingtons at all. . . He/she has white feathers on their wings (the long feathers at the end) but the other little chocolate orpington doesn’t — he/she has all brown feathers so. . . Idk! lol

Thanks all!!! 👍😍

So sweet and precious, thank you for sharing!!! Melon is adorable, congrats on your lap chicken! 🥰

It can be challenging to tell the sex of Silkies until they are older, but some things to look for in sexing Silkie chicks are their crown, or crest of feathers. At around 7 weeks old, males will begin to develop streamer feathers, which are longer, single feathers that extend beyond the crest. Silkie cockerels also tend to hold their bodies more upright than pullets and are a bit more thicker-set and taller. Also, males will develop wattles sooner than females, and in females, the comb can have a delicate "V" shape and males may have a wider "U" shape.

I hope this info helps, and good luck to you with all of your sweet chickens!

Hey there,
Thank you for the many pictures, unfortunately, I don't have much experience/understanding with sexing silkies:(
Update in a few weeks.
