This chick came to us with an order as our rare chick from McMurray hatchery. It is only half the size of the standard chicks it came with, so I am guessing bantam of some kind. (I are smart...huh?) LOL

It continues to morph into a very interesting looking little thing. Today I noticed that its ear patch thingy (does it have a real name?)was purple!

Does anyone have an idea of what this bird is and what gender?

Oh! It also makes the sweetest sort of noises, really different than a regular chicken sort of noise. It kind of sounds like the noises a turkey makes. I'd like to get more of them.....if I can only figure out what it is!

I appreciate any input!

Dustin, it is almost 9 weeks old. Are SS Hamburg's small? He (also tell me why you think it is a he-so I'll know what to look for) is only half the size of all of the other chicks he arrived with.

Thanks!

They are about the size of leghorns. I said he because of the comb. I may not be right there, as I didn't know its age at that point. This isn't a breed that I am familiar with, but I still lean towards male.

Good indicators of the sex of the chicks are early reddening of the comb and wattles. Pointed hackle (neck) feathers or pointed saddle feathers (back by the tail) Its also a good indication when the tails start to grow in and you will see sickle feathers ( the curving main tail feathers).

Right and I am not finding info on the colored earlobes. Do SSH's have blue/purple earlobes?

Thanks everyone, I do appreciate the help in figuring out what this little bird is.

So, it has a rosecomb? And this one is red enough to make you think roo?

If you will click on the link in my last post, you will see that they have white lobes. They will become much larger and turn white, with possible traces of red or blue. That link also has some information on the breed itself and you can also search them on google.
