Natural shade for the chicken run

Well, that explains a lot in my (former) neighborhood. Thanks for the info and link. đź‘Ť
THANKS for the Question.

I know I had looked it up when I planted the original grapes, and spaced the posts. Clearly I had forgotten when I added the new plants the next year... Not too late to fix it, **IF** I remember to do so this winter.

UC Davis claims they can spread far and dig deep, to capture a surface area of about 100 sq meters (almost 1,100 sq ft) as a mature plant) - that's nearly 17' in every direction from the central trunk. I should perhaps move my Flame and Thompson seedless - that might explain (in part) why they have fared so poorly - too close to the better established muscadines.

I have always been told that when planting anything one should assume that the spread of the roots will equal the spread of the branches/vines.

Likewise - I just didn't equate a 20' long singular "branch" to a 34' diameter spread... Probably because its my efforts that keep it a single 20' branch, and not some creeping green mound remniscent of a 70s horror flik.

Where I live the wild muscadines fight with the wisteria for the privilege of eating the trees.
